Le label californien What Records est fondé par Chris Ashford au printemps 1977. Avec un micro budget, What sort les premiers singles des Germs; Dils (futurs Rank & File), Controllers (Johnny Stingray fondera Kaos), Skulls (avec Marc Moreland guitariste des futurs Wall Of Voodoo), Eyes (Charlotte Caffey et Don Bonebrake futurs Go-Go's), le légendaire sampler tros titres "What EP"... Le premier label punk de Los Angeles mutera en Iloki Records. Cet excellent best of What Records est sorti en 1990 sur Iloki Records. A noter un titre inédit des Pandoras et deux des Untold Fables groupe garage punk 80's avec Robert Butler futur Miracle Workers...Great Comp...
